Masai Mara National Reserve
Masai Mara (Maasai Mara) is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves, and it is one of the best-known and most popular reserves. The Masai Mara and the Serengeti National Park form Africa’s most diverse, incredible, and spectacular ecosystems and possibly the world’s top safari big game viewing ecosystem. Safaris are, without a doubt, some of the best you ever get.
Because of its big skies, rolling open savannahs, the romance of films like Out of Africa, the annual wildebeest migration, density of game, variety of birds, chance of a hot air balloon ride, and interaction with the tall red-robed Masai people - a combination of all these attracts people to the Mara all the time.
The Masai tribes live side by side with the wildlife in amazing harmony. Wildlife makes the Masai land one of the most unique wilderness regions. In the reserve area, the wildlife is protected and takes precedence over human activities, but human habitation and domestic livestock are permitted.
Sports & nature
Key Natural Features
Vast Savannahs: The landscape consists of open plains and grasslands, providing ample grazing for large herds of herbivores.
Rolling Hills and Acacia Trees: The reserve is characterized by gently rolling hills, with iconic acacia trees scattered across the landscape, lending it the Maasai word "Mara," meaning "spotted".
Riverine Forests: Along the rivers, lush riverine forests provide dense vegetation, offering cover and a crucial water source, particularly during the dry season.
Mara River: The lifeblood of the reserve, the Mara River is a focal point for wildlife and plays a critical role in the Great Migration, featuring dramatic river crossings.
Wildlife & Biodiversity
The "Big Five": The Masai Mara is famous for its high density of the "Big Five": lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos.
The Great Migration: The reserve is a temporary home to the annual Great Migration, where over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the plains and river in search of fresh grazing.
Abundant Birdlife: The area is a haven for birds, hosting over 500 species, including vultures, marabou storks, and ostriches.
Other Mammals: Visitors can also expect to see large herds of giraffes, topi, warthogs, and smaller animals like mongoose and foxes.
Nightlife
Night game drives in the Masai Mara are only permitted in the surrounding private conservancies, such as Mara North, Mara Naboisho, and Olare Motorogi, and not inside the main Maasai Mara National Reserve itself. These night safaris offer a unique opportunity to see nocturnal predators like leopards and lions, as well as other elusive animals in their active nighttime environment.
Why Night Game Drives Aren't Allowed in the Main Reserve
Regulations: Night drives are restricted to private concessions and conservancies outside the national park.
What to Expect on a Night Game Drive
Nocturnal Wildlife: You can observe nocturnal predators such as lions and leopards in action, as well as other creatures that are active after dark.
Predator Activity: Lions emerge from their daytime lethargy to hunt as the sun goes down, and leopards are often seen at night.
Guided Experience: An armed ranger accompanies the vehicle for both safety and to guide you to the nocturnal animals
Culture and history info
Community Involvement: The Maasai community, the nomadic people of the region, plays a vital role in the conservation of the Mara through land stewardship and eco-tourism.
Conservation Efforts: The ecosystem is a success story of conservation, with efforts in place to protect the natural environment and wildlife for future generations.
