Dar es Salaam

Despite its name, which means “abode of peace” in Arabic, Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest and busiest city. It is the country’s most important business and commercial hub and is situated right on the Indian Ocean.

Dar es Salaam is the main port of call for most visitors, as it is an ideal location from which to access both the wilderness areas and the beaches of Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Visa requirementsTanzania visa requirements for tourists include a passport valid for at least 6 months, a completed application, a return ticket, and a fee (typically $50 for single entry, $100 for U.S. citizens). Travelers should apply for an e-Visa online at least 2-3 weeks before travel, though visas are available on arrival.

Core Requirements for Tourist/Ordinary Visa

  • Passport: Valid for at least 6 months with at least one blank page.
  • Application: Duly filled-in and signed application form.
  • Photo: A recent passport-size photograph.
  • Return Ticket: Proof of return ticket or onward travel arrangements. Fee: Payment of the visa fee (varies by nationality, $50 for most, $100 for U.S. citizens).

Application Methods

  • e-Visa: Highly recommended for faster processing. You will receive a "grant notice" via email, which you present upon arrival.
  • Visa on Arrival: Available at major entry points (airports/borders). It is recommended to have USD cash for payment.

Specific Considerations

  • Minors: Children under 18 traveling alone or with one parent require a notarized letter signed by both parents/legal guardians and a copy of their ID.
  • Business/Other Visas: Require additional documentation, such as a letter from the organization or host, business registration documents, or contracts.
  • Volunteer Work: Prohibited on a standard tourist visa; a Class "C" Residence Permit is required.
  • Health: Travelers should check current yellow fever vaccination requirements.

Sports & nature

The city's most important sites are all remnants of its colonial past, such as German and British landmarks and architecture. Other sites which are worth a visit include the Village Museum, the National Museum, numerous picturesque markets, the Botanical Gardens, St. Joseph's Cathedral, the White Father's Mission House and the old State House. The harbor city is Tanzania's transportation hub with a railway system and several highways

Culture and history info

The first European to land in the town of Mzizima, Dar es Salaam's former name, was Albert Roscher in 1859. The city received its present name in 1866 from Sultan Seyyid Majid of Zanzibar.

Also city started to bloom economically with the establishment of the German East Africa Company and the construction of the Central Railway Line at the beginning of the 20th century. During World War I, German East Africa was captured by the British and renamed Tanganyika. Dar es Salaam was from then on Tanganyika's administrative and commercial center.

Under British rule, the city had separate European (Oyster Bay) and African (Kariakoo and Ilala) areas. The city started to rapidly grow after World War II with political developments such as the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU). Tanganyika attained independence from colonial rule in 1961, with Dar es Salaam remaining the country's capital even after Tanganyika and Zanzibar formed the independent United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Although in 1973 Dodoma was made the country's capital city, Dar es Salaam still remains the primary city.
