Amboseli National Park

Short Overview

Amboseli is a land of wide dry plains with the vistas stretching to the farthest horizon to become one with the sky. It is dotted with green swamps among semi-arid plains of acacia trees and grasses where great herds of elephants rule the land. The park is renowned for its elephant population - large, tusked bulls, of which the most iconic Tim, a huge elephant with tusks reaching the ground, sadly died of natural causes in 2020, at an estimated age of fifty years. Amboseli was also home to Echo, probably the most researched elephant in the world. Dr Cynthia Moss, an American conservationist, followed her for forty years until Echo, the star of many books and documentaries, died aged sixty in 2009.

The stunning backdrop of the tallest African mountain, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, makes Amboseli a darling for photographers and filmmakers.

Details of Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is a visually stunning park located just three hours drive from Nairobi. Whether a bird lover, predator fan, or grazers’ admirer, Amboseli National park at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro won’t let you short of awe! Known as the Royal Court of Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park offers unparalleled views of Mount Kilimanjaro - Africa's tallest mountain.

Amboseli is considered Kenya‘s biosphere reserve. The name Amboseli in Maa (Maasai language) means place of water, and it reveals its true nature. In its swamps live huge herds of elephants, as well as lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Much other wildlife will reveal themselves - observe hippos, zebras, giraffes, waterbucks, warthogs, buffaloes, wildebeest, and gazelles. And more than 47 raptors of 350 bird species, among them flamingoes, cormorants, storks, and ostriches.

Amboseli is also home to Maasai communities. Being an open country means a good walking territory, and many camps and lodges organize game viewing walks or trips to visit and spend time in the local Maasai villages.

Lake Amboseli is a non-permanent lake that floods only in heavy rainfall and is fed by underground streams from Mt. Kilimanjaro. Along the streams are large papyrus swamps that form the only permanent water source for the animals in the park. The swamps attract large numbers of animals such as elephants and buffaloes, and are surrounded by very tall Acacia trees.

A motley crew of wildlife

You can find four members of the Big Five in Amboseli - like in many other parks rhinos have not survived the poaching epidemic of the late 20th century. But there is still a motley crew of wildlife to be found. Besides the lion, elephant, leopard, and buffalo, you can spot other wildlife. Spotted and striped hyena, Maasai giraffe, leopard, cheetah, hyrax, did-dik, lesser kudu and nocturnal porcupine reside here. Large swamps are hosting elephants, crocodiles, hippos and waterfowls.

A paradise for birdwatching safaris. With over 350 bird species recorded in the park, of which 47 raptors, it is a paradise for bird lovers and watchers. The Observation Hill Tower is accessible during the day, and the hilltop offers countless photographic opportunities and amazing views of the sunset to behold.

Nightlife info

Enjoy a night game drive in Amboseli National Park with a sundowner experience. Use spotlights to spot nocturnal animals and enjoy a sundowner with a view of the sunset and Mount Kilimanjaro.

On Clubbing, Amboseli National Park itself does not have typical nightlife, as it is a wildlife conservancy focused on natural experiences; however, nearby areas like Oloitokitok and Mulala offer bars, restaurants, and a cultural camp for nightlife activities. Options include establishments like Makuti Club and Amboseli Lavy for music and socializing, and various other bars such as Silent Bar Kimana and Wetemi Bar and Restaurant for local experiences.

Culture and history info

The history and culture of Amboseli National Park are defined by the Maasai people, whose ancestral lands form the park's ecosystem, and the long, often contentious, relationship with wildlife conservation efforts. This relationship has evolved from colonial-era land displacement to modern partnerships that integrate the Maasai into the park's management and ecotourism.

Cultural legacy of the Maasai

The Amboseli ecosystem has been the home of the nomadic Maasai people for centuries. Their culture, identity, and semi-pastoral way of life are deeply tied to the land and its wildlife.

  • Pastoral lifestyle: The Maasai traditionally live in harmony with the local environment, relying on their herds of cattle, goats, and sheep. Their livestock is a primary source of sustenance, wealth, and status.
  • Traditional settlements: The Maasai live in circular, temporary villages known as enkang or manyattas. These are constructed by women using local materials like sticks, mud, and cow dung and are built inside a thornbush fence to protect livestock from predators.
  • Warrior culture: The culture includes a patriarchal society with a prominent age-set system and warrior traditions (morans) that are celebrated through initiation ceremonies.
  • Distinctive attire: Visitors to the region often see Maasai men and women in their traditional clothing, including the brightly colored red shuka wraps and intricate beadwork.
  • Cultural experiences: Today, many Maasai communities near the park welcome tourists, offering village visits that feature traditional songs and dances, house tours, and displays of their unique beadwork. This provides an important source of income and helps preserve their traditions.
